Reasons for Urostomy Surgery Urostomy surgery is usually performed as a result of cancer of the bladder, injury or problems with urine control as are frequently seen with paraplegia. Once the bladder is removed, a urostomy is permanent.
Construction of an Ostomy To construct an ostomy, the surgeon draws a loop or an end portion of the bowel through a small incision in the abdomen to the skin surface. The end of the bowel will have one opening for stool; a loop will have two openings; one for stool and one to connect to the resting portion of the bowel that is not in use. The bowel is turned back on itself like a cuff and the surgeon stitches the edges to the skin to form the stoma . An end ostomy tends to be permanent, and a loop ostomy may be temporary.
A colostomy stoma is located on the lower left abdomen. An ileostomy or a urostomy stoma is located on the lower right abdomen.
